Blog updates

It has been a long time since one of these listed personal updates. I’ve been trying to do less of them, as i don’t want to be totally see through. But, I have some stuff to post about and these posts go down fairly well. So, once in a while can’t hurt, can it? :)

Blog updates
I am constantly seeking for new ways to improve my blog. I have made a few aesthetic changes here and there. Mostly barely noticable.

  • I have changed the text formatting to make my blog much more readable. Before, it wasn’t very nice to look at the big chunks of text on my blog. It looked like one big chunk of text (my trick to get you to use an rss reader :D) Now, it’s well formatted with appropriate spacing.
  • The about page has been updated slightly. It now has a photo, and it is longer than it was before. I’ll be looking at this one again, as this page needs constant attention. As Darren Rowse puts it, it is a key conversion page.
  • At an attempt to increase rss readers, I have added a large rss button in the ’subscribe’ zone of the sidebar. You can’t deny that it doesn’t draw the eyes ;)
  • I have updated the advertising page, taking away sponsored posts and reviewme’s. For now, i will only be doing sidebar image adverts. As my current advertiser is not renewing, I will discount the next person who buys a spot by 25% and charge $30 for a 1 month sidebar image.

comments It was pretty strange having over 5k comments in moderation and being able to do nothing about it. Every time i tried to go to the moderation page in the administration panel, things crashed on me. I had to go into phpmyadmin to delete them with a mysql query directly from the database. I did install the wordpress top commentators plugin, but spam comments were showing up in there so it has been uninstalled for now.

If anybody else is having the problem, run this mysql query:

DELETE FROM `wp_comments` WHERE `comment_approved` = ‘0′ AND `comment_agent` = ” `comment_type` = ’spam’

Everybody is saying that the pagerank update is starting any minute now, some saying that it has started all ready. The iwebtool pagerank prediction tool has predicted my blog a pagerank of 5. This will hopefully boost up my blog’s revenue.

Menewsha
Menewsha’s stats are going great. Having surpassed one million forum posts, and approaching ten thousand users - I would rank around 1,300 in big-boards if they were around to add me. I think the redesign is going great, i’m having some good artists of mine collaborate with my designer for a few aspects. I just can’t wait for when it’s done. It will definitely motivate me to work harder on the site.

My productivity seems to have gone up a lot more lately. In my post at blogtrepreneur, I touched on the subject of this - but I wasn’t doing it too well myself. Now, I seem to be doing a lot more work instead of browsing the web/reading blogs when i’m at the desk. It definitely makes me feel better about things, give it a go. Not only does it help your web businesses, but it relieves stress off of yourself.

With the redesign, I have plans of getting a good marketing campaign going. Purchasing some advertising, in a few companies to find out which works best. The viral marketing campaign will also be going back into full swing.

Holiday
From the 23rd of August to the 8th of September, I will be on holiday. I’m getting my sites prepared for autopilot mode for this time. I’ll be going to Japan, Australia and then Thailand with my family. It should be great fun and a big break. It’s probably not best to try and contact me in this time, unless you want a really late reply.

p.s. did anybody catch me on tv? :) I know a few people off msn did.

Sounds like things are going well, keep posting quality content and your RSS will go up, people probably seen it in the first place but i guess it cant hurt

And personal posts are good ;), they show theres a real person behind a site

Yeah, that’s what i’ve been thinking. People do prefer personal posts much more. I just don’t want to talk about my projects too much.

I think the PageRank update is done. It looks like all my sites have changed. Most of them went from N/A to 0 because I read the update only took into account July 4th and before. I didn’t start on most of my sites until after July 4. Well, hopefully next time.

The update usually takes quite a while. Most sites go to 0 before the update. But, it can take up to a month to get all the sites updated.

Thanks for the little glimmer of hope. I was hoping for a PR 3 or 4, but I will take anything other than 0.

Awesome post, Josh! I just noticed that your footer isn’t even. I looks like you could shift it over about 10 px to the right :)
